Q&A with Dr. Bernardy
What is your favorite animated movie or cartoon?
My favorite animated movie is The Croods.
What is your favorite children's book?
I have Pokey Little Puppy almost memorized, because my children loved it when they were little
What was your favorite childhood toy?
I had a microscope growing up and fancy rock collection that I added to when I could. I have been a scientist forever!
Who is your greatest inspiration?
My mom was a high school teacher and my father was an elementary school teacher, and they always stressed the importance of education and helping other people
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I spend all my time with my husband and kids, watching movies or going to parks and trails for a picnic. I also spend a lot of time with my extended family, or reading a good book, if I am on my own.
What inspired you to work in pediatrics?
I have known that I wanted to be doctor since I was 5 years old. Initially, I wanted to be a neonatologist, because I had an adventure at birth that I had heard about my whole life. Working through residency, however, I realized that I enjoyed developmental milestones in pediatrics, behavioral health (ADHD, autism), and those with other lifelong conditions that give them challenges
What unique qualities, skills, or services set you apart, and how do you build a positive rapport with patients and their families?
I love getting to know my patients and their families as a whole person. I enjoy watching my patient's grow and bring their own children to see me.
When I was growing up, the pediatrician I saw, never really listened to me as a patient, so I have always strived to listen to families' concerns, including the patient when I can.
I have also faced medical challenges as a child that made me different and medical challenges with my children that I hope have helped me gain a better perspective to help the families and children that I take care of today
